SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 324 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the American YouthWorks AmeriCorps volunteers who served in Bastrop County in the aftermath of the 2011 wildfires; and WHEREAS, These exceptional volunteers came together to help provide relief for those affected by the devastating fires; AmeriCorps members registered nearly 1,000 survivors for assisted cleanup, and more than 4,000 volunteers came through the doors of the organization's Volunteer Reception Center; and WHEREAS, The AmeriCorps volunteers came from two American YouthWorks programs, the Texas Conservation Corps and Casa Verde Builders, and they provided invaluable aid in helping to restore and rebuild Bastrop State Park; they felled hazardous trees, rebuilt damaged bridges, restored hiking trails, and worked with community members on erosion control projects; and WHEREAS, Volunteers also worked on private property that had suffered severe wildfire damage and was posing a risk to public infrastructure; they helped to plant 190 acres with native seed to replace lost vegetation and minimize the impact of soil erosion on the community; and WHEREAS, Today, nearly a year and a half after the fires, American YouthWorks programs continue to play an important role in restoring the areas affected by the fire, and they are truly deserving of recognition for their exemplary efforts; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby commend the American YouthWorks AmeriCorps volunteers on their indispensable work in Bastrop County following the devastating Labor Day wildfires and extend to them best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of the service of these dedicated young people.
