SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 521 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in recognizing Early College High Schools around Texas as they celebrate the week of March 25 through March 30, 2013, as Early College High School Week; and WHEREAS, These unique schools blend high school and college curricula; they particularly benefit financially challenged students by allowing them to earn an associate's degree or up to 60 college hours during their high school years; and WHEREAS, Texas is at the vanguard of this burgeoning movement, with 59 Early College High Schools and six blended institutions combining the concept of Early College High School with Texas Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Academies; together, these schools have more than 17,600 students in Texas; and WHEREAS, The primary objectives of Early College High Schools include preparing students for post secondary success by offering dual credit at no additional cost, designing course work and a learning environment that are comparable to those in college settings, and providing intense academic counseling; these schools seek to raise college attendance and success rates and to strengthen the connections between middle schools, high schools, and institutions of higher learning to promote a statewide college-going culture; and WHEREAS, Early College High Schools provide an unprecedented opportunity in the Texas public school system for students who might not otherwise have the resources to attend college; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby pay tribute to Early College High Schools across Texas as they celebrate Early College High School Week; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of Early College High School Week.
