SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 527 In Memory of Josue V. Quintanilla WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Josue V. Quintanilla, who died February 24, 2013, at the age of 84; and WHEREAS, Josue Quintanilla was born October 17, 1928, in Austin; he left high school in 1945 to serve his country in the United States Navy; and WHEREAS, He married Marcelina Rivera Quintanilla in 1950, and the couple enjoyed more than 62 years of marriage together; they were blessed with seven children, seven grandchildren, and a great-grandchild; and WHEREAS, Recognizing the need to continue his education, he returned to school and earned a high school diploma before entering The University of Texas College of Pharmacy; when he earned his bachelor's degree in 1955, he was one of the first Mexican Americans to graduate from the university; and WHEREAS, Mr. Quintanilla worked as a pharmacist for many years in Corpus Christi, where he participated in numerous community and professional organizations, including the Nueces County Pharmaceutical Association, the Parent Teacher Association, the Boy Scouts of America, and Jobs for Progress, Incorporated; he returned to his hometown of Austin in 1981 and worked for Walgreens until his retirement; and WHEREAS, He was active in the civil rights and migrant farm workers' movements; he marched alongside his colleague and founder of the American GI Forum, Dr. Hector P. Garcia, in support of the United Farm Workers; he also held several offices with the American GI Forum; and WHEREAS, Josue Quintanilla was a man of strong character and courage who gave generously of his time to others, and he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Josue V. Quintanilla; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Josue Quintanilla.
