                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 587
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Dr. Weldon Woolf Hammond, Jr., for his exceptional
 achievements in the field of hydrogeology; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Hammond is the holder of the Amy and V. H.
 McNutt Endowed Distinguished Professorship in Geology at The
 University of Texas at San Antonio; he has been a member of the
 university's faculty since 1976 and has served as the director of
 the university's Center for Water Research since 1986; and
 WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the Center for Water
 Research has become one of the San Antonio Water System's primary
 research institutions and has received significant increases in
 funding from the state; the center also has made a profound
 difference in the lives of countless people by helping to build a
 network of organizations, institutions, and agencies to meet the
 challenges of providing clean water, watershed management, and
 basic health practices to remote villages in Guatemala and
 Honduras; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Hammond has published numerous articles and
 abstracts in scholarly journals and is in much demand to present his
 findings at scientific conferences; he is active in numerous
 professional organizations and civic groups, and he was largely
 responsible for the Groundwater Availability Model that is used
 statewide; and
 WHEREAS, In appreciation of his scholarship and service, The
 University of Texas at San Antonio is naming an endowed chair in his
 honor; it is truly fitting that he be recognized for his outstanding
 scientific work and his significant influence on creating and
 shaping the state's water policy; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 83rd Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Weldon Woolf Hammond, Jr.,
 on his many contributions to The University of Texas at San
 Antonio and his profession and extend congratulations to him on
 the naming of the Dr. Weldon W. Hammond Distinguished
 Professorship in Hydrogeology in his honor; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
