SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 670
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
join the citizens of Houston and Texans across the state in
celebrating May 12, 2013, as Miller Outdoor Theatre Day; and
WHEREAS, Miller Outdoor Theatre was bequeathed to the city
by mining engineer and cotton broker Jesse Wright Miller as a
permanent bandstand to be used for municipal purposes;
originally known as Miller Memorial Theatre, it opened in 1923
with a performance of Springtimes of Our Nation, an annual
municipal pageant; and
WHEREAS, The venue eventually outgrew its original
structure, and a new facility was designed to accommodate larger
and more sophisticated productions; the iconic and award-winning
structure still in use today was created by the architectural
firm of Eugene Werlin and Associates and opened in 1968; and
WHEREAS, Miller Outdoor Theatre has become one of Houston's
most beloved cultural treasures as a gathering place for the
community and the site of countless free performances; through
the years, it has hosted such varied acts as the Houston Symphony
Orchestra, the Houston Shakespeare Festival, and Theatre Under
the Stars; and
WHEREAS, Today, the theater offers more than 130 free
performances of music, theater, dance, and film each year; it is
truly deserving of recognition for the enduring role it has
played in the cultural life of the city; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
Legislature, hereby commend the City of Houston, the Houston
First Corporation, and the Miller Theatre Advisory Board on their
exemplary stewardship of this outstanding facility and extend to
the people of Houston best wishes for a memorable Miller Outdoor
Theatre Day; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
honor of this special occasion.
