SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 687 In Memory of Mike M. Anzaldúa, Jr. WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Corpus Christi in mourning the loss of Mike M. Anzaldúa, Jr., who died December 21, 2012; and WHEREAS, Mike Anzaldúa served as an educator at Del Mar College for more than four decades; during his career, Mr. Anzaldúa held many distinguished positions, ranging from interim dean of Arts and Sciences to chair of the Department of English and Philosophy; at the time of his death, he held the title of Professor Emeritus of English; and WHEREAS, Mr. Anzaldúa was widely respected by his peers and beloved by his students; he played a leading role in the introduction of such innovations at Del Mar College as the College Developmental Education Council, the Mariachi Del Mar musical initiative, and the Mexican American Studies Program; and WHEREAS, For his years of commitment to higher education and for his teaching, Mr. Anzaldúa earned numerous honors; he received the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement Teaching Award in 2004, the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development Excellence in Teaching Award in 1998, and the Spanish Language Institute Outstanding Lecturer Medallion in 2001; and WHEREAS, A highly regarded leader in the field of education, Mr. Anzaldúa served as a longstanding role model in Corpus Christi; he was greatly admired for his devotion to teaching, his passion for learning, and his philanthropy, and he will long be remembered by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Mike M. Anzaldúa, Jr.; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mike Anzaldúa.
