                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 732
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 join the citizens of the Rio Grande Valley and Texans across the
 state in recognizing the 75th anniversary of the Charro Days
 Fiesta; and
 WHEREAS, This much-anticipated annual event was founded
 during the Great Depression as a means to lift community spirits
 during those difficult times, to celebrate the rich
 multicultural heritage enjoyed by the citizens of Brownsville,
 and to unite the people of the United States and Mexico; and
 WHEREAS, Since its beginning, the Charro Days Fiesta has
 featured residents and visitors dressed in the traditional
 costumes of Mexico, particularly those of the Mexican cowboys
 known as charros, who were heroes of the borderlands; and
 WHEREAS, The fiesta offers such attractions as elegant
 costume balls, popular street parties, and fireworks, all
 launched with the traditional joyful shout known as the grito;
 over the years, the festival has expanded to include the Sombrero
 Festival and the naming of Mr. Amigo; in addition to preserving
 the past, the goals of the event include introducing new
 generations to the area's traditions, and schoolchildren play an
 important role each year with their own special Children's
 Parade; and
 WHEREAS, Brownsville's sister city of Matamoros has always
 been a key participant in the festivities with its Fiestas
 Mexicanas; the mayors of the two cities meet each year at the
 Hands Across the Bridge ceremony to officially kick off this
 lively celebration; and
 WHEREAS, The Charro Days Fiesta has for 75 years been a
 vital part of the cultural life of the Rio Grande Valley, and it
 is truly deserving of recognition as a long-standing showcase of
 the area's rich heritage and traditions; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
 Legislature, hereby commend the organizers and sponsors of the
 Charro Days Fiesta on their commitment to celebrating the
 region's history and culture and extend to them and to all
 participants congratulations on the 75th anniversary of this
 memorable celebration; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
 commemorate this special occasion.
