                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 805
 In Memory
 of
 Ariel Hernandez, Jr.
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of San Antonio in mourning the loss of Dr. Ariel
 Hernandez, Jr., who died recently; and
 WHEREAS, Ariel Hernandez, Jr., was born January 11, 1948,
 in Los Angeles, California; he grew up in communities around the
 world, including the City of San Antonio; he graduated from San
 Antonio's Jefferson High School and attended San Antonio
 College; he went on to attend The University of Texas at Austin
 before earning his medical degree from the University of Southern
 California Medical School; and
 WHEREAS, He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret
 Alice, and the couple enjoyed 43 years of marriage; together,
 they raised seven children, and they were blessed with 11
 grandchildren; and
 WHEREAS, After Dr. Hernandez completed his internship and
 residency, he began his medical practice in San Jose, California,
 in 1977; he later moved to San Antonio, where he practiced for
 more than 20 years and dedicated his efforts to serving those
 most in need; and
 WHEREAS, Dr. Hernandez was chosen to serve as the physician
 for Pope John Paul II on the occasion of the pontiff's 1987 visit
 to San Antonio; he served his community in a variety of ways and
 was the author of the guidelines for the hiring of employees for
 the City of San Antonio; he also played an important role in
 establishing medical care for the victims of Hurricane Katrina;
 and
 WHEREAS, He was a lifelong advocate of education and worked
 to instill in his family and in those he met the importance of
 pursuing excellence in all their endeavors; and
 WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he
 gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom, his generous spirit,
 and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
 forgotten; and
 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished
 forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
 83rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
 bereaved family of Dr. Ariel Hernandez, Jr.; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
 Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
 memory of Dr. Ariel Hernandez, Jr.
