H.R. No. 253
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Doris
Cupp Guinn of Daingerfield, who passed away on May 6, 2013, at the
age of 88; and
WHEREAS, Born on May 13, 1924, the former Doris Lester was a
native of Daingerfield and the youngest of seven children of James
and Era Lee McTyre Lester, along with her twin sister, Dorothy; she
grew up on the family's farm during the Great Depression and spent
the majority of her life in Daingerfield, apart from a short time
when the family moved to Louisiana and she attended Rodessa High
School; and
WHEREAS, In 1948, she married Sam W. Cupp, a returning
soldier who served in the European theater; they shared two decades
together before his death, and they became the parents of two
daughters, Sandra Kay and Judy Ann; over the years, their family
grew to include four treasured grandchildren, Amber, Sammye,
Lindsey, and Daniel, as well as three great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, After she was widowed, Mrs. Guinn was determined to
secure a future for her daughters and purchased a small grocery
store that she named Twins' Drive-In, becoming an entrepreneur at a
time when few women were; after years of success running that
business, she was later employed at Knieff's, during which time she
developed many lasting friendships; her resourcefulness and will to
achieve while working as a single mother made it possible for her
daughters to further their education; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Guinn was fortunate to find love again in 1975,
when she exchanged wedding vows with Orville Guinn, with whom she
enjoyed five years before his passing; she delighted in her role as
a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and was a constant
source of wisdom and encouragement to the people around her; and
WHEREAS, A valued congregant at South Union Baptist Church,
she served as a teacher, a choir member, and a member of the Naomi
Sunday School Class and the ladies' auxiliary; seldom at a loss for
ways to spend her time, she was fond of cooking, crocheting, tending
to her yard and garden, and above all, doting on her loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Doris Guinn lived a rich and purposeful life
centered around her faith and family, and she will forever be
remembered with tenderness and affection by all those fortunate
enough to have known her; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
of Doris Cupp Guinn and extend sincere sympathy to the members of
her family: to her daughters, Sandra Quarles and her husband,
Dearl, and Judy Pilgrim and her husband, Randy; to her stepsons,
Paul Guinn and his wife, Patti, and Rusty Guinn and his wife,
Sheila; to her grandchildren, Amber Quarles, Sammye Phillips,
Lindsey Pilgrim, and Daniel Pilgrim; to her great-grandchildren;
and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Doris
Guinn.
