No. 47 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 20th Century Club of Mineola is celebrating its centennial in 2013; and WHEREAS, Created to promote cultural development, the women's study club first met on February 18, 1913, in the home of Vada Chappell; many of its 14 original members were teachers by profession; since its inception, the group has met continuously, even during wartime, to discuss books and learn more about the topics of the day, as well as to plan charitable endeavors; and WHEREAS, The members of the 20th Century Club have contributed to the wider community through their engagement in a variety of civic and charitable projects; deeply committed to literacy, the organization assisted in the founding of the public library, and it remains involved in supporting that institution and raising funds for improvements; and WHEREAS, For the past 100 years, the 20th Century Club has benefited the citizens of Mineola while providing an intellectual forum for its members, and its continued existence is a testament to the dedication of the many distinguished women who have participated in its programs; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the 20th Century Club and extend to its members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the group as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
