By: Sanford H.R. No. 5 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, For nearly three decades, Sheriff Terry G. Box has dedicated himself to preserving the peace and protecting the citizens of Collin County; and WHEREAS, One of the longest-serving sheriffs in the Lone Star State, Sheriff Box was a member of the McKinney and Plano police departments before joining the Collin County Sheriff's Office in 1981; after the death of the previous sheriff, this dedicated peace officer was appointed to serve out the term in 1985 and has since been reelected six times; in addition, he has been the president of the Sheriffs' Association of Texas and the chair of the Texas Commission on Jail Standards; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Box has earned the respect of his fellow sheriffs for his skill and professionalism and the admiration of many for his staunch defense of the Second Amendment; he received the 2002 Bill Decker Award from the Sheriffs' Association of Texas and the Patriot Employer Award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense; and WHEREAS, In addition to his responsibilities as Collin County's chief peace officer, Sheriff Box has sponsored the Shoot-Out Fore Kids Golf Tournament for the past 20 years, raising more than $1.8 million for local charities; the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center presented him with the 2010 Eagle Award and named him as one of the 20 Heroes of Collin County in 2011; his other accolades include the 2011 Heart for Seniors Award from the Wellness Center for Older Adults and an award from the Collin College Student Leadership Academy; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Box's commitment to his duties has greatly benefited the citizens of Collin County, and he may indeed reflect with pride on his outstanding service; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend Terry G. Box for 28 years as Collin County sheriff and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Sheriff Box as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
