No. 53 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Dr. Jack Dennis McCullough, Jr., of Nacogdoches, an esteemed educator and community leader, passed away on June 16, 2013, at the age of 81; and WHEREAS, A sixth-generation Texan, Jack McCullough was born in San Antonio on August 8, 1931, to Colonel Jack D. McCullough and Helen Williams McCullough; he graduated from Stephenville High School, Tarleton Junior College, and The University of Texas at Austin; earning National Science Foundation Scholarships, he went on to receive a master's degree from Stephen F. Austin State University and a doctoral degree in biology and oceanography from Texas A&M University; and WHEREAS, Dr. McCullough was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and he served his country with distinction for seven years, achieving the rank of captain before his honorable discharge; early in his notable career in education, he worked as a biology teacher with the Houston Independent School District and with Texas A&M University; in 1964, he settled in Nacogdoches, where he joined the biology department at his alma mater, SFA; and WHEREAS, During his outstanding 36-year tenure, Dr. McCullough served as director of the environmental science graduate studies program and published more than 50 scientific papers, many of which were presented at state, national, and international scientific conferences; he was awarded a number of honors for his work, including the Regents Professor Award for Research, the Distinguished Professor Award from the Alumni Association, and the SFASU Foundation Faculty Achievement Award; outside of the classroom, he served his field as president of the Texas Academy of Science and as editor for the Texas Journal of Science; and WHEREAS, Dr. McCullough was an active member of the Nacogdoches community; in addition to his contributions to a number of local committees, he led historical walking tours through the town and narrated bus tours; he shared his time with the Boy Scouts of America, serving on the Eagle Scout board of review, and was a longtime member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served his congregation as an elder; and WHEREAS, Also a valued leader of Rotary International, Dr. McCullough served the club as president, assistant district governor, and district governor; in his work with the group, he traveled across the country to attend conferences and participated in mission trips to Central America in an effort to help to improve the health and living conditions of villagers; and WHEREAS, Dr. McCullough, above all else, was devoted to his family; he was married for 60 years to the former ElaRuth Bankston, with whom he had two sons, Thomas and Bruce; through the years, the couple were further blessed with three grandchildren, Fred, Lindsay, and Miles; and WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a man's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark on the world as they move through it, and Jack McCullough's contributions to his community will long resonate in the lives of all who knew him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Jack Dennis McCullough, Jr., and extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, ElaRuth Bankston McCullough; to his sons, Thomas McCullough and his wife, Maria, and Bruce McCullough and his wife, Diana; to his grandchildren, Fred, Lindsay, and Miles; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Jack Dennis McCullough, Jr.
