H.R. No. 9 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Corpus Christi chapter of the NAACP, under the leadership of president Terry Mills, is sponsoring A Kings Dream: United We Stand on August 28, 2013, a gala event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic "I Have a Dream" speech; and WHEREAS, On this date in 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., and delivered his stirring address to the crowd of 250,000 people who were participating in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom; at the end of the speech, Dr. King departed somewhat from his prepared text and, with spontaneous eloquence and passion, described his dream of an America free of racism and hatred; and WHEREAS, This unforgettable occasion is being honored in Corpus Christi with United We Stand, an evening of celebration and remembrance featuring re-enactors in historical costume, a march, and storytellers whose tales will evoke the era, the history of the Civil Rights Movement, and the names of its heroes; the evening culminates with a recitation of the speech in its entirety, followed by a fireworks display and musical performance; and WHEREAS, Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech is one of the most important orations in American history and an essential document in the common cultural heritage of humankind, and United We Stand is a fitting celebration of our nation's dream of equality and its strength through diversity; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commemorate A Kings Dream: United We Stand and extend sincere best wishes to NAACP Corpus Christi and its members and guests for a memorable and inspirational event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for NAACP Corpus Christi and chapter president Terry Mills as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
