 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Officer Roy Newton Smith of the Corpus Christi
 Police Department lost his life in the line of duty on April 20,
 1953, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and
 WHEREAS, A 21-year-old who had recently been sworn in as an
 officer, Roy Smith was responding to a call when he was involved in
 a tragic vehicle collision; he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean
 War, and at the time of his death, he was survived by his wife,
 Laverne, and his daughter, Gail; and
 WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the
 courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as
 Officer Smith, who willingly place themselves in harm's way each
 day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens;
 now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of
 Officer Roy Newton Smith of the Corpus Christi Police Department.
