No. 1853 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Woodlawn Academy, in the San Antonio Independent School District, is celebrating its transition to an academy and the completion of its recent renovations with an open house on April 7, 2015; and WHEREAS, This outstanding school opened as Woodlawn Elementary in 1924, and it moved to its present location in 1930; a new wing was built in the 1990s to accommodate a growing population, and in the early 2000s a library and a music room were added; and WHEREAS, Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, the school is transitioning from a prekindergarten through fifth grade elementary school to a prekindergarten through eighth grade math and science academy; the new academy features smaller classes for students, allows more siblings of different ages to attend school together, and enables students and teachers to spend more years together; extracurricular activities include a robotics club, a student-created yearbook, a choir, and a spirit team, as well as a percussion club and a running club; and WHEREAS, Thanks to an investment of $11.9 million by the district, this transition includes extensive renovations to the Woodlawn campus, which now boasts new construction ranging from science and art labs to a band hall, cafetorium and kitchen, and courtyard and playgrounds; although extensive in scope, the renovations were designed and executed to preserve the historical character of the school building; and WHEREAS, Preparing for the future as it preserves the best of the past, Woodlawn Academy is continuing its 90-year tradition of providing its students with the excellent education they need to become productive and engaged citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the Woodlawn Academy open house and extend to the academy's students, teachers, and parents sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable event; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Woodlawn Academy as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
