No. 2177 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw of the Nueces County Sheriff's Office lost his life in the line of duty on September 10, 1877, and his service and sacrifice will not soon be forgotten; and WHEREAS, In September 1877, Deputy Sheriff Shaw and an assistant rode to Brooks County to arrest a man who was wanted for selling stolen hides; Deputy Sheriff Shaw rode in the back of a wagon with the prisoner, his wife, and their two children on the return trip, and while the party was stopped in Banquete, someone stabbed the deputy to death; the prisoner's wife claimed the deputy was assaulted by a party of armed men, but her husband was later put on trial for the murder; and WHEREAS, Our state and nation benefit immeasurably from the courage and commitment of law enforcement professionals such as Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw, who willingly place themselves in harm's way each day to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life and exemplary service of Deputy Sheriff Thomas Shaw of the Nueces County Sheriff's Office.
