84R19829 BK-D By: Fallon H.R. No. 2282 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, H. L. Brockett Elementary School in the Aubrey Independent School District has been designated a 2015 Texas School of Character by Character.org; and WHEREAS, Each year, Character.org and its state affiliates recognize schools and districts that have implemented character-building initiatives that positively influence student behavior, academic achievement, and the overall campus environment; the criteria for the honor are based on Character.org's 11 Principles of Effective Character Education and include fostering a culture of kindness, promoting shared leadership, and engaging families and communities as partners in these efforts; and WHEREAS, Through a number of programs, Brockett Elementary has urged pupils to motivate and support one another in their learning efforts at and across all grade levels; fifth-grade students regularly serve as reading mentors for kindergartners, who in turn write encouraging notes to older students as they take the STAAR exams; service projects, including a canned food drive, are held to inspire public spiritedness, and an elected student council takes the lead in coordinating these activities; students are also taught to stand up against bullying, and they are joined in this endeavor by participants in the Watch D.O.G.S. program, where fathers are invited to the campus for a day to help ensure school safety; and WHEREAS, Character education plays an integral part in the development of children into the responsible citizens and ethical leaders of tomorrow, and Brockett Elementary School has established itself as a model for success in this vital endeavor; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate H. L. Brockett Elementary School on its designation as a 2015 Texas School of Character by Character.org and extend to its students, faculty, and staff sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the school as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
