No. 241 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine, scheduled to open in the fall of 2016, has been awarded a $2.88 million grant through the United Health Foundation "Helping Build Healthier Communities" initiative; and WHEREAS, This generous contribution will support the creation of the Colonia Integrated Care Program: VIDAS (Valley Inter-professional Development and Services), a project to improve health care access in unincorporated border communities; and WHEREAS, Through mobile clinics and telecommunication technologies, the program will promote wellness education, offer screenings, and provide dental and mental health services; it will also aim to formalize training for and increase the number of skilled promotoras, health workers who connect the health care system with colonia residents through shared language and culture; and WHEREAS, The United Health Foundation endowment will provide the Colonia Integrated Care Program an opportunity to transform health care in underserved areas, and this vital objective will benefit countless Texans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine on its receipt of a grant from the United Health Foundation and commend all those working to develop the Colonia Integrated Care Program; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the institution as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
