 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, J. J. Avila has distinguished himself through his
 performance as a high school and college basketball player, and he
 is indeed worthy of special recognition; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Avila was a four-year starter for the McAllen
 High School basketball team, and he twice led the Bulldogs to the
 regional finals of the University Interscholastic League state
 playoffs; he finished his high school career as McAllen's all-time
 leading scorer, and he was recognized for his talents on the
 hardwood with a number of prestigious awards, including two
 All-Valley Player of the Year Awards, District 30-5A MVP honors,
 and selection to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches
 All-State team; and
 WHEREAS, Continuing his athletic career at the collegiate
 level, Mr. Avila chose to attend the U.S. Naval Academy as a member
 of the basketball team; he went on to enjoy one of the top debut
 seasons in Navy history, shining in numerous statistical categories
 and leading all freshmen in scoring for the Patriot League; he
 excelled during his sophomore campaign as well, averaging 15.9
 points and 7.2 rebounds per game to lead the Midshipmen; he
 eventually left the academy and moved back to McAllen, where he
 enrolled at South Texas College and worked diligently to refine his
 game by competing in city leagues; eager to reenter the world of
 major college basketball, he accepted an athletic scholarship to
 Colorado State University for the 2013-2014 season; and
 WHEREAS, This gifted player quickly became a valuable asset
 for the Rams, starting all 32 games as a junior and securing a spot
 on the third team All-Mountain West squad; Mr. Avila followed that
 performance with an outstanding senior season, helping the team
 compile an impressive 27-7 overall record and clinch the No. 1 seed
 in the National Invitation Tournament, and earning all-conference
 honors for the second consecutive year; and
 WHEREAS, J. J. Avila has demonstrated admirable dedication in
 pursuit of his goals, and he may reflect with justifiable pride on
 his achievements as he looks ahead to a bright and promising future;
 now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
 Legislature hereby commend J. J. Avila for his achievements as a
 student-athlete and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued
 success; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Mr. Avila as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
