No. 2924 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Mosquito Control Division of Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services is marking its 50th anniversary in 2015; and WHEREAS, This critical unit was established in 1965 in response to an outbreak of St. Louis encephalitis in the Harris County area the previous year; originally organized as a county department, Mosquito Control became a division of Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services in 1995; and WHEREAS, Nationally recognized for its efforts, Mosquito Control was the first group to document the existence of the Asian tiger mosquito in the continental United States, a discovery it made in 1985; the division employs sophisticated research methods and technologies to prevent and control a wide array of ailments spread by mosquitos, such as West Nile virus, St. Louis encephalitis, dengue fever, and chikungunya; moreover, the unit has partnered with a number of entities, including universities, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, to find effective ways to deal with mosquito-borne diseases and the risks they pose to public health; and WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Mosquito Control Division has contributed significantly to protecting the health and well-being of Harris County residents, and it is indeed fitting that the division's staff be commended on their outstanding work; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Mosquito Control Division of Harris County Public Health and Environmental Services and extend to its staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the Mosquito Control Division as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
