                    SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1067
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize June 6, 2015, as Transverse Myelitis Awareness Day in
 Texas; and
 WHEREAS, Transverse myelitis is a devastating neurological
 condition that targets the myelin that covers nerve cell fibers
 and causes the spinal cord to become inflamed; an estimated 1,400
 people in the United States are diagnosed with the condition each
 year; and
 WHEREAS, Symptoms of transverse myelitis include severe
 neurological pain, muscle weakness, and numbness in the lower
 extremities; in severe cases, the disorder can lead to paralysis
 and possibly death; and
 WHEREAS, Transverse myelitis is not widely known to the
 general public and can be difficult to diagnose; known causes of
 the condition include certain infections and immune system
 disorders; in 60 percent of the cases, the cause is unknown; and
 WHEREAS, The Transverse Myelitis Network and the
 Transverse Myelitis Folks are among the organizations providing
 support and resources for those affected by the debilitating
 spinal cord disorder; a greater public awareness of the disorder
 is key to furthering scientific research and to improving
 treatment for those living with the condition; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
 Legislature, hereby commend all those who are working to raise
 awareness and to further our understanding of this neurological
 disorder and recognize June 6, 2015, as Transverse Myelitis
 Awareness Day in Texas; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
 honor of Transverse Awareness Myelitis Day.
