SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 520 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the citizens of Georgetown in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Georgetown Public Library; and WHEREAS, The Georgetown Public Library began its service to the people of the area on March 21, 1966; it had an inventory of approximately 1,200 volumes and was located in two small rooms off Main Street; and WHEREAS, The library soon outgrew its first home and moved into its own building in 1970; it continued to develop and expand, outgrowing its third location as well, and as it begins its 50th year, it occupies a facility that includes nearly 111,000 books, a child-friendly first floor, and a coffee shop, along with the traditional quiet areas and meeting rooms on the second floor; and WHEREAS, Through the years, the library has received invaluable support from the Friends of the Georgetown Library, whose more than 740 members make it one of the largest organizations of its kind in the state; and WHEREAS, The Georgetown Public Library has been an integral part of the social fabric of the city, and its half-century of service is being celebrated with a year's worth of anniversary events and activities; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby commend the staff, volunteers, and patrons of the Georgetown Public Library on their commitment to literacy and public service and extend to them best wishes for a memorable 50th anniversary celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in honor of this special occasion.
