SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 683 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Tom Luce, who is being honored by Mental Health America of Texas with the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Butt Award for Mental Health at the 52nd Annual Honoring Dinner: An Evening of Hope; and WHEREAS, Tom Luce was a founding partner of the law firm of Hughes and Luce and served as managing partner until his 1997 retirement; a graduate of Southern Methodist University, he specialized in the field of corporate and litigation practice and served as lead attorney on billion dollar acquisitions and mergers and as lead trial attorney on major commercial disputes; and WHEREAS, Mr. Luce served as a United States Assistant Secretary of Education under President George W. Bush; he has been appointed five times by Texas governors to serve in major positions, including chief justice pro tempore of the Texas Supreme Court; and WHEREAS, He had a profound impact on the public schools of this state as chief of staff for the Texas Select Committee on Public Education, which was responsible for creating the most comprehensive education bill in Texas history; and WHEREAS, Mr. Luce is currently serving as president and chief executive officer of the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, a nonpartisan organization designed to improve the delivery of mental health services for all Texans; he is truly deserving of special recognition for his many achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby commend Tom Luce on his many contributions to this state and nation and extend congratulations to him on being named the recipient of the Mary Elizabeth Holdsworth Butt Award for Mental Health; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
