 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 AN ACT
relating to the issuance of childhood cancer awareness license
 plates.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Subchapter G, Chapter 504, Transportation Code,
is amended by adding Section 504.655 to read as follows:
Sec. 504.655. CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS PLATES. (a) The
department shall issue specialty license plates to raise awareness
of childhood cancer. The department shall design the license
plates in consultation with an organization that seeks to raise
awareness of childhood cancer in this state.
 (b) After deduction of the department's administrative
costs, the remainder of the fee for issuance of the license plates
shall be deposited to the credit of an account created by the
comptroller in the manner provided by Section 504.6012(b). Money
deposited to that account may be used by the General Land Office
only to provide grants to benefit organizations operating in this
state that raise awareness of, conduct research on, or provide
services for persons diagnosed with childhood cancer.
 (c) The General Land Office and an organization that
receives a grant under Subsection (b) may enter into a memorandum of
understanding establishing the respective duties of the General
Land Office and the organization in relation to carrying out the
 purposes of that subsection.
 (d) Section 504.702 does not apply to a specialty license
 plate issued under this section.
SECTION 2. The General Land Office and an organization that
receives a grant under Section 504.655, Transportation Code, as
added by this Act, are not required to adopt a new memorandum of
understanding under that section if a previous memorandum of
understanding adopted by the General Land Office and the
organization accomplishes the purposes of that section.
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017.
