The bill would allow a licensed chiropractor to make a determination that a student participating in an interscholastic athletics practice or competition might have suffered a concussion. Such a determination triggers a requirement that the student be immediately removed from the practice or competition. Under existing law, such a determination can be made by a coach, a physician, or a licensed health care professional.The bill would take immediate effect if it receives a two-thirds vote of each house of the Legislature. Otherwise, the bill would take effect September 1, 2017.The Board of Chiropractic Examiners anticipates any additional work resulting from the passage of the bill could be reasonably absorbed within current resources. Local Government Impact No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
