The bill would amend the Local Government Code to authorize certain political subdivisions to commission and employ as a peace officer a legal permanent resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States. The bill would also amend the Occupations Code to direct the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to issue a peace officer license to a person who is a legal permanent resident of the United States if the person meets certain requirements and is an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States. It is assumed any costs associated with implementing the provisions of the bill could be absorbed within existing resources.The bill would take effect September 1, 2017.
