No. 1498 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Mary Young assumed the office of acting police chief of Texas Southern University in March 2017, becoming the first woman to serve as head of the school's Department of Public Safety; and WHEREAS, After graduating from James Madison High School at the age of 16, Chief Young earned her bachelor's degree in communications and law enforcement from Prairie View A&M University and her master's degree in criminology and sociology from Sam Houston State University; she is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and WHEREAS, Chief Young is a veteran of the Houston Police Department, where she most recently served as the Southwest Patrol Division's community service specialist, designing and implementing outreach programs for young people and seniors; she also worked with nonprofits, community leaders, and local businesses to build stronger relationships between the police and the neighborhoods they serve; and WHEREAS, This dynamic law enforcement professional holds a Master Peace Officer's certificate and a Homeland Security certificate, as well as a teaching certificate in secondary education; she is a member of the Institute of Social Justice, the National Black Police Association, the Houston Police Officers' Union, the African American Police Officers League, and Teach for America; and WHEREAS, Mary Young exemplifies the highest ideals of the law enforcement profession, and Texas Southern is fortunate to have the benefit of her seasoned leadership in this critical post; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Mary Young on her appointment as acting police chief at Texas Southern University and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Chief Young as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
