 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Georgina Cecilia Pérez of El Paso was elected to a
 four-year term on the Texas State Board of Education on November 8,
 2016; and
 WHEREAS, A native of El Paso and a graduate of Eastwood High
 School in the Ysleta Independent School District, Georgina Pérez
 earned degrees in business administration and accounting and human
 resource development along with a teaching certification from The
 University of Texas at El Paso; she subsequently served Ysleta ISD
 for more than a decade as an eighth-grade teacher, department
 chair, teacher mentor, and professional development educator, and
 she remains involved in curriculum development and educator
 training; and
 WHEREAS, Ms. Pérez has been active in promoting literacy
 efforts as the founder of Tu Libro, which to date has distributed
 more than 150,000 books to students living in rural and
 impoverished communities in El Paso County who are without regular
 access to a library; in addition, she and her team have spearheaded
 the creation of a new library in Socorro to provide over 55,000 area
 residents with free access to reading materials; and
 WHEREAS, The founder and director of the Cotton Valley
 Scholars education program, Ms. Pérez is also the founder and board
 president of the Rural Schools Scholarship Foundation and a
 creative director for Celebrate Freedom Week; moreover, she is
 active on the state level as secretary of public affairs for the
 Texas Alliance of Black School Educators; in her work as a member of
 the State Board of Education for District 1, she represents Texans
 in 40 counties across West and Southwest Texas and holds a place on
 the board's committee on instruction; and
 WHEREAS, With her wealth of leadership experience and
 tireless commitment to Texas schoolchildren, Georgina Pérez is well
 suited to helping shape the future of public schools in our state,
 and her fellow Texans are fortunate to benefit from her service in
 this important role; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate Georgina Cecilia Pérez on her
 election to the Texas State Board of Education and extend to her
 sincere best wishes for a productive and rewarding tenure; and, be
 it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Ms. Pérez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
