H.R. No. 173 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Kingsville are gathering in Austin on January 31, 2017, to celebrate Kingsville Day at the State Capitol; and WHEREAS, Founded on Independence Day in 1904, Kingsville is an important center of higher education in South Texas; Texas A&M University--Kingsville, which opened as South Texas Teachers College in 1925, includes the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering, the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture, the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute, and the Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy; the university has claimed seven national football championships and has been recognized for its excellent environmental engineering program, jazz band, and wildlife society; and WHEREAS, Naval Air Station Kingsville features the premier undergraduate pilot training facility in the United States and prepares U.S. Navy and Marine Corps pilots for their key role in national defense; the base is also home to an Army Reserve Medical Evacuation unit and an Armed Forces Reserve Center, and a U.S. Border Patrol facility is situated nearby; and WHEREAS, Kingsville, along with the rest of Kleberg County, is a place of diversified industries; thanks to the presence of companies producing oil, gas, nuclear, wind, and solar power, the area's economy has continued to grow, resulting in new jobs and an improved quality of life for residents; among the businesses based in Kingsville are Proco, Inc., and Texas Cementing Services; and WHEREAS, The visitor center, museum, and saddle shop for the world famous King Ranch are located in Kingsville; larger than Rhode Island, King Ranch covers 825,000 acres of South Texas land and is known for developing the Santa Gertrudis cattle breed; the ranch is also highly respected for horse breeding and agribusiness; and WHEREAS, The citizens of Kingsville are working to preserve their rich history while building a future of expanding opportunity, and they may take great pride in the role their community has played in the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby recognize January 31, 2017, as Kingsville Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
