 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Since 1993, the third week in October has been set
 aside as National Veterinary Technician Week to recognize the
 contributions made by members of this caring profession; and
 WHEREAS, Veterinary technicians play a vital role in the
 daily functioning of veterinary practices, working under the
 supervision of a veterinarian; technicians handle many of the same
 responsibilities that nurses and other medical professionals
 perform for physicians, such as obtaining and recording patient
 histories, collecting specimens, preparing for surgeries, and
 assisting in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures; and
 WHEREAS, Like veterinarians, vet techs are trained to work
 with several species of animals; the American Veterinary Medical
 Association accredits veterinary technology programs leading to
 associate or bachelor's degrees, which cover such subjects as
 anatomy, microbiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, clinical
 pathology, and radiology; all students in AVMA-accredited programs
 complete a preceptorship, practicum, or externship to gain hands-on
 experience; after passing their credentialing examination, they
 must keep their knowledge current with continuing education courses
 in order to maintain their license; and
 WHEREAS, The majority of veterinary technicians are employed
 in private practice, but the demand for their skills is rapidly
 expanding; today, veterinary technicians also serve in the
 military, food safety inspection, zoos, wildlife facilities,
 animal control, diagnostic laboratories, humane societies, and
 other settings; and
 WHEREAS, Highly skilled professionals, veterinary
 technicians work tirelessly to ensure the health and well-being of
 animals, promote humane treatment, and advance the standard of care
 in their growing field; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize October 15-21, 2017, as National
 Veterinary Technician Week.
