No. 414 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Cecilia Garcia Akers is being recognized as the Humanitarian of the Year by LULAC Council No. 1 in Corpus Christi at the organization's 21st annual awards banquet on February 16, 2017; and WHEREAS, A native of Corpus Christi, Cecilia Akers earned a biology degree from St. Mary's University and worked as a medical assistant to her father, Dr. Hector P. Garcia, before completing her degree in physical therapy from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston; she went on to serve as a member and chair of the Texas Board of Physical Therapy Examiners and as director of rehabilitative services at three major hospitals in San Antonio; she is currently in private practice, specializing in geriatric orthopedics and neuromuscular rehabilitation; and WHEREAS, This notable Texan is a founding member and chair of the board for the Dr. Hector P. Garcia Memorial Foundation, and she has also served on the boards of the Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi Foundation, the Joe A. Gonzalez Education Is Our Freedom Foundation, and the Incarnate Word Academy; she is the author of a biography about her father, The Inspiring Life of Texan Hector P. Garcia, and after speaking about the book at the Library of Congress, she donated a collection of his World War II photographs to the library's Veterans History Project; she has received a number of accolades, including the Humanitarian Award from the Corpus Christi chapter of the NAACP and the American GI Forum Women's Hall of Fame Award; and WHEREAS, The strength of our communities is enhanced by the devoted efforts of individuals such as Cecilia Akers, whose tireless work has contributed immeasurably to the quality of life in the Corpus Christi area and beyond; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Cecilia Garcia Akers on her receipt of the Humanitarian of the Year Award from LULAC Council No. 1 and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mrs. Akers as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
