No. 568 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Leah Desirae Jiran has been named a 2016 Corpus Christi Caller-Times/Citgo South Texas Distinguished Scholar in the achiever category; and WHEREAS, The Caller-Times/Citgo South Texas Distinguished Scholars program was established to reward local students who have demonstrated excellence in specific areas of achievement; since its inception in 1988, hundreds of young men and women have been selected for this prestigious honor, and each of the 2016 winners received a $1,000 scholarship to help fund their college studies; and WHEREAS, The daughter of Kelly and Joshua Hoelscher, Ms. Jiran has been fighting myxopapillary ependymoma for several years, yet despite undergoing treatment for this rare form of cancer, she maintains a 3.70 grade point average at Tulosu-Midway High School, where she is ranked 71st in her senior class of 294 students; in addition to her academic endeavors, she is also manager and secretary of the school swim team; and WHEREAS, This outstanding young Texan has pursued her goals with tremendous dedication, and she may take great pride in all that she has accomplished as she looks ahead to a future bright with promise; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Leah Desirae Jiran on her selection as a 2016 Corpus Christi Caller-Times/Citgo South Texas Distinguished Scholar and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Jiran as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
