No. 599 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, World-renowned cellist Zuill Bailey collected two trophies at the 59th annual Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles on February 12, 2017; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bailey won in the categories for best instrumental solo and best contemporary classical composition with his performance in Tales of Hemingway, a cello concerto commissioned especially for him and composed in 2015 by Michael Daugherty, who drew inspiration from the works of Ernest Hemingway; the piece was recorded by Mr. Bailey and the Nashville Symphony under the conductorship of Giancarlo Guerrero; and WHEREAS, Zuill Bailey graduated with a bachelor's degree from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University in 1994 and received a master's degree from the Juilliard School in 1996; a Telarc International recording artist, he has produced a discography of some 20 albums and has performed with numerous symphony orchestras across the globe; in addition to his busy touring schedule, he serves as a professor of cello at The University of Texas at El Paso and as artistic director of El Paso Pro-Musica and the Sitka Summer Music Festival; and WHEREAS, Widely hailed as a star in classical music, Zuill Bailey has forged a distinguished career as a chamber musician, recitalist, and educator, and he may take justifiable pride in this prestigious recognition from the Recording Academy; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Zuill Bailey on his receipt of two statuettes at the 2017 Grammy Awards and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Bailey as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
