 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Proud residents of the city of Freer are gathering
 in Austin on March 7, 2017, to celebrate Freer Day at the State
 Capitol; and
 WHEREAS, Situated in northwestern Duval County, Freer is in
 an area originally known as Las Hermanitas and later called
 Government Wells; the settlement began to truly develop in 1907
 with the discovery of the Piedras Pintas oil field, and the town was
 officially named for local landowner Daniel John Freer in 1925; and
 WHEREAS, Freer saw continued growth over the following
 decade, and in 1938, it was the second-largest producing oil field
 in the country, leading Life magazine to call it "the last of the
 tough frontier oil towns"; and
 WHEREAS, Today, Freer's economy is driven by oil and gas,
 ranching and hunting, and small businesses, and residents and
 visitors alike enjoy the annual Rattlesnake Roundup; a number of
 notable Texans hail from the city, including athletes Jim Acker and
 Steve McMichael, former state representative Paul Sadler, and
 former state representative and railroad commissioner Buddy
 Temple; and
 WHEREAS, The people of Freer are working to preserve their
 rich history while building a future of expanding opportunity, and
 they may indeed reflect with pride on their remarkable
 contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, therefore,
 be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
 Legislature hereby recognize March 7, 2017, as Freer Day at the
 State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
 wishes for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin.
