No. 806 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The 2016 University Interscholastic League 2A Division 1 state football championship belongs to Refugio High School after its team's victory in the title game on December 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington; and WHEREAS, Appearing in their third state final in the past four years, the Bobcats matched up against Crawford High School in what proved to be a dramatic showdown; the score remained close throughout the game, and the teams were tied 20-20 as the game dwindled to its final minutes; in a clutch performance, Refugio drove from its own 25 to the opponents' one yard line, and with just eight seconds left on the clock, Diego Gonzales booted an 18-yard field goal that secured the trophy with a 23-20 win; and WHEREAS, Refugio's triumphant 2016 campaign included five shutouts in the regular season, with nine overall wins and only a single loss; in the playoffs, the team's combination of stout defense and powerful offense dominated opponents from La Villa, Junction, Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco, Mason, and Centerville High Schools en route to the championship contest; and WHEREAS, Under the direction of head coach Jason Herring, the Bobcats received essential contributions throughout the year from each member of the roster as they proved themselves one of the finest teams in the Lone Star State; and WHEREAS, The Refugio High School football players demonstrated admirable skill and determination in winning the state title, and these talented student-athletes will treasure the memory of this accomplishment for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Refugio High School football team on winning the 2016 UIL 2A Division 1 state championship and extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
