                    LEGISLATIVE BUDGET BOARD    Austin, Texas      FISCAL NOTE, 85TH LEGISLATIVE REGULAR SESSION            April 25, 2017      TO: Honorable Larry Taylor, Chair, Senate Committee on Education      FROM: Ursula Parks, Director, Legislative Budget Board     IN RE:SB444 by Taylor, Van (Relating to school marshals for private schools.), As Introduced    No significant fiscal implication to the State is anticipated.  The bill would amend the Code of Criminal Procedure to allow the governing body of a private school to employ and appoint school marshals to make arrests and exercise the same authority as a peace officer. The bill would amend the Education Code to require the governing body of a private school to disclose in writing whether any employee of the school has been appointed a school marshal if the school receives a written request for this information by a parent or guardian of an enrolled student. The bill would take effect immediately if passed within the necessary voting margins, or September 1, 2017.The Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, and the Texas Education Agency indicate the bill could be implemented with existing resources.  Local Government Impact No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
