SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 702 In Memory of Renato E. Cardenas WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Brownsville in mourning the loss of Renato E. Cardenas, who died April 21, 2017, at the age of 86; and WHEREAS, Renato Cardenas was born on December 8, 1930, in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico; he moved to Brownsville at the age of 11 to live with his aunt, and he attended Brownsville public schools; and WHEREAS, Renato joined the United States Air Force as a young man; he served with distinction during the Korean conflict, and he completed his military service having earned the rank of staff sergeant; he graduated from Texas Southmost College and also attended Pan American University in Edinburg; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cardenas had a rewarding career as an entrepreneur and found notable success in both real estate development and automotive sales; he began developing subdivisions in Brownsville in 1969 and later established Cardenas Development Company, Incorporated; he opened an automotive dealership in 1971, and today, the Cardenas Group of automotive dealerships includes locations in Harlingen and Raymondville; and WHEREAS, Renato Cardenas was a generous man who worked tirelessly on behalf of his community; he served as a Brownsville city commissioner for a number of years, and he was a cofounder of Valley Community Hospital, the Brownsville Foundation for Health and Education, and Sunrise Bank; he served on the boards of numerous professional and civic organizations, and he was a member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church for 50 years; and WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. Cardenas shared 61 years of marriage with Mary Rose Cardenas, and they were blessed with five children, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; he was beloved by many, and he leaves behind memories that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Renato E. Cardenas; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Renato Cardenas.
