R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Across the nation, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is
observed in October, and members of D'Feet Breast Cancer are
calling attention to this crucial health issue with their annual
Celebration of Life event in Galveston on October 21, 2017; and
WHEREAS, Formed in 2000, D'Feet Breast Cancer is a
grassroots, volunteer-led nonprofit group that offers free
mammograms and diagnostics in Galveston County to uninsured and
underserved women ages 40 to 64; working with the Galveston County
Health District and other local partners, the organization has
provided more than 11,000 mammogram screenings to date; and
WHEREAS, Each year, the D'Feet Breast Cancer Celebration of
Life features a run/walk fund-raiser with the goal of promoting
early detection of breast cancer, a disease that strikes one in
eight women; the 2017 event is taking place at Moody Gardens and
will include certified 5K and 10K runs, a 5K walk, and a kids' 1K
run; and
WHEREAS, This year's event will pay special tribute to the
founder of D'Feet Breast Cancer, Darleene "Dolly" Joy Warren, who
passed away on January 26, 2017; an admired civic leader in the
Galveston community, she benefited a host of worthy organizations,
including The University of Texas Medical Branch, the Friends of
Moody Gardens, the Galveston Historical Foundation Homes Tour, and
the Hospice Care Team; and
WHEREAS, The Celebration of Life offers a prime opportunity
for Galveston residents to support the fight against breast cancer,
and it is a pleasure to commend D'Feet Breast Cancer for the
organization's proactive efforts in behalf of this vital cause;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby recognize October 21, 2017,
as D'Feet Breast Cancer Day in House District 23 and extend to all
those involved with the Celebration of Life event sincere best
wishes for a meaningful and memorable occasion; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for D'Feet Breast Cancer as an expression of high regard by
the Texas House of Representatives.
