No. 488 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Dr. Carlos Cardenas, president of the Texas Medical Association, and Dr. Jose Cazares, president of the Texas Dental Association, are rendering exceptional service and proudly representing the Rio Grande Valley as leaders in the Texas medical community; and WHEREAS, Hailing from McAllen, Dr. Carlos J. Cardenas has amassed more than 25 years of experience in medicine and health care management; he graduated from The University of Texas Medical Branch and became a board certified internal medicine specialist in 1988; four years later, he cofounded South Texas Gastroenterology Associates, where he practices today; in 1995, he was among a group of doctors who joined together to establish Day Surgery at Renaissance at Edinburg, now one of the largest physician-owned facilities in the United States; and WHEREAS, Dr. Cardenas served as president of the Hidalgo–Starr County Medical Society in 2001 and was elected in 2005 to the board of trustees of the Texas Medical Association, which named him its 2017-2018 president; deeply committed to the Rio Grande Valley and its next generation of medical professionals, he recently helped to open a teaching hospital for students at the new University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine; and WHEREAS, A McAllen-based dentist, Dr. Jose "Joey" Cazares is a graduate of Baylor College of Dentistry; he has operated his own private dental practice for over 25 years, during which time he has twice been nominated by his peers as Texas Dentist of the Year; and WHEREAS, Dr. Cazares joined the Texas Dental Association in 1997, and he served on the TDA Board of Directors from 2005 to 2008; he is a past president of the Rio Grande Valley District Dental Society, Dentists Who Care, and the Texas and Rio Grande Valley Academies of General Dentistry; at the national level, he currently serves on the Academy of General Dentistry's Legislative and Governmental Affairs Council and has been a delegate to the American Dental Association; elected as president of TDA for 2017-2018, he is the first member of the RGV District Dental Society to serve in that role; and WHEREAS, These esteemed Texans have long distinguished themselves as champions for public health in their community, and medical professionals across Texas are indeed fortunate to have the benefit of their strong, visionary leadership; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby honor Dr. Carlos Cardenas and Dr. Jose Cazares for their service as president of the Texas Medical Association and Texas Dental Association, respectively, and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Cardenas and Dr. Cazares as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
