 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Tela Terry was crowned Miss Juneteenth-Baytown at
 the 2017 Miss Juneteenth Baytown Pageant, held on June 9 at the
 J. D. Walker Community Center; and
 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Rho Omicron Omega chapter of Alpha
 Kappa Alpha Sorority, the pageant is part of Baytown's annual
 Juneteenth festival, which commemorates the official end of slavery
 in Texas; and
 WHEREAS, On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Major General Gordon
 Granger issued an order in accordance with the Emancipation
 Proclamation, freeing all the slaves in the State of Texas; in the
 years since, the anniversary of this act of liberation has been
 celebrated with gatherings that are both joyful and reflective;
 layered with meaning, these Juneteenth observances pay tribute to
 all those who endured the rigors of slavery, honor their
 immeasurable contributions to the development of this state and
 nation, and recognize the myriad accomplishments of the generations
 that have followed; and
 WHEREAS, Through her outstanding performance in the 2017 Miss
 Juneteenth Baytown Pageant, Tela Terry has brought great pride to
 her family and her community, and it is a pleasure to honor her for
 this notable achievement; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Tela Terry on
 being crowned Miss Juneteenth-Baytown at the 2017 Miss Juneteenth
 Baytown Pageant and extend to her sincere best wishes for the
 future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Tela Terry as an expression of high regard by the Texas
 House of Representatives.
