SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 160 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Juan E. Mejia, who has been named the recipient of the Nelson Administrative Leadership Award by the Texas Association of Community Colleges; and WHEREAS, Dr. Mejia is the provost and vice president for academic and student affairs at Tyler Junior College; he received a bachelor's degree in education from Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi before earning a master's degree in adult education and a doctorate in educational leadership from Texas A&M University--Kingsville; and WHEREAS, Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Mejia has been instrumental in the growth and development of community colleges across the state; he played a vital role as Texas State Technical Institute made the transition to Texas State Technical College, and he was a founder of South Texas Community College and led the institution's evolution to become South Texas College; and WHEREAS, Community colleges enroll nearly half of the state's college students and are an essential part of the higher education landscape in Texas; the leadership and vision of educators like Dr. Mejia ensure that these institutions will continue to play an important role in making Texas a better place in which to live, work, and raise a family; and WHEREAS, An exemplary educator and administrator, Dr. Mejia is respected and admired by colleagues and students alike, and it is truly fitting that he receive special recognition for his outstanding contributions to the state; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Juan E. Mejia on his commitment to higher education and extend congratulations to him on receiving the Nelson Administrative Leadership Award; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
