SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 63 In Memory of Ruben Contreras WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Seguin in mourning the loss of Ruben "Rocky" Contreras, who died July 6, 2017, at the age of 80; and WHEREAS, Rocky Contreras was born on October 25, 1936, in San Marcos, where he became a standout Golden Gloves boxer; he went on to serve the nation with distinction as a member of the United States Marine Corps; and WHEREAS, After his military service, he moved to Seguin, where he was a successful businessman and public servant; he was the owner of Rocky's Drive In Grocery Store and the Barber Shop next door, and he represented District I on the Seguin City Council for 26 years; as a councilmember, he was instrumental in bringing numerous infrastructure improvements to the city; and WHEREAS, Mr. Contreras also established the Seguin Boxing Club, where he trained young boxers, and he was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 61; and WHEREAS, He and his beloved wife of 54 years, Kathy Contreras, were blessed with a son, Carl, and four grandchildren, Carlos, Elan, Kierdis, and Chaylyne; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten; and WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Ruben Contreras; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ruben Contreras.
