The bill would amend the Transportation Code by adding Chapter 227, relating to state trooper memorial signs, to require the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to place memorial signs at certain highway locations in honor of state troopers specified by the bill. The bill would require TxDOT to accept a grant or donation to assist in financing the construction and maintenance of a memorial sign and would prohibit TxDOT from designing, constructing, or erecting a memorial sign unless a grant or donation is made to TxDOT to cover the costs. The bill would authorize TxDOT to coordinate with the Department of Public Safety (DPS) to make nonsubstantive changes regarding the appropriate name and appearance of a memorial sign under Chapter 227. Based on the analysis provided by TxDOT, it is assumed any costs or duties associated with implementing the provisions of the bill could be absorbed within the agency's existing resources.
