No. 1352 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The boys' basketball team from Clarendon High School furthered the school's tradition of athletic excellence by winning the 2022 University Interscholastic League 2A title to retain its mantle as state champion; and WHEREAS, Following a stellar performance in the regular season, the Broncos entered the playoffs on a wave of momentum and dispatched Sunray, Vega, Gruver, New Home, and Christoval High Schools to punch their ticket to the state tournament for the sixth time in program history; there, Clarendon toppled LaRue LaPoynor 69-60 in the semifinals to advance to the championship contest; and WHEREAS, On March 12 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Clarendon took the floor against previously undefeated Lipan High School; after trailing by eight points at halftime, the Broncos ignited an impressive run in the second half, outscoring their opponents 49-27; emerging victorious by the final score of 65-51, the Broncos hoisted the championship trophy for the second straight season and closed out a storybook year with an overall record of 31 wins and only two losses; and WHEREAS, Clarendon was led by championship game Most Valuable Player LaMarcus Penigar, and he was joined on the 2A All-Tournament Team by Cayden D'Costa and Jmaury Davis; the Broncos also received valuable contributions throughout the year from the other members of the roster: Harrison Howard, Jordan Herndon, Lyric Smith, Jaxan McAnear, Tyler Harper, Kaleb Bolin, Anthony Ceniceros, Mason Sims, Levi Gates, Colton Caudle, Reagan Wade, and Grant Haynes; these determined athletes were ably guided by head coach Boston Hudson and assistant coach Alton Gaines; and WHEREAS, By winning back-to-back state titles, the Clarendon Broncos have burnished their reputation as an emerging basketball powerhouse, and they may indeed reflect with pride on a job well done; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Clarendon High School boys' basketball team on winning the 2022 UIL 2A state championship and extend to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
