H.R. No. 218 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Legendary quarterback Tom Brady announced his retirement on February 1, 2023, concluding an illustrious professional football career that spanned 23 seasons; and WHEREAS, Widely regarded as the greatest quarterback of all time, Mr. Brady is the National Football League's all-time leader in passing yards, touchdown throws, and Pro Bowl selections; chosen as the league's Most Valuable Player on 3 occasions, he has won a record 7 Super Bowl rings in 10 overall appearances; and WHEREAS, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. was born on August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California; a star baseball and football player in high school, he was selected by the Montreal Expos in the 1995 Major League Baseball Draft but instead opted to play football at the University of Michigan; and WHEREAS, In 2000, the New England Patriots famously waited until the sixth round of the NFL Draft to select Mr. Brady; after appearing in just one game during his rookie year, he took over as the starter for the Patriots in game two of the 2001 season, and his steady hand helped the team upset the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI; he led New England to championships in 2004 and 2005, and during the 2007-2008 campaign, he threw 50 touchdown passes as the Patriots recorded the first 16-0 regular season record in league history and went on to play for the title; and WHEREAS, Under Mr. Brady's guidance, the Patriots returned to the Super Bowl five times between 2012 and 2019, capturing the title in 2015, 2017, and 2019; after joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he tacked on a seventh championship in 2021 at the age of 43, becoming the oldest quarterback to win a Super Bowl; and WHEREAS, Mr. Brady is also renowned for his philanthropic work; he is a longtime supporter of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and he has raised over $46 million for Best Buddies International, a global organization that supports people with disabilities; moreover, he is a cofounder of the TB12 Foundation, which helps at-risk athletes receive the care they need; and WHEREAS, Tom Brady has earned a special place in the pantheon of sports legends, and his myriad achievements on and off the field will continue to inspire football fans for many years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby honor Tom Brady for his NFL career and his civic engagement and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Brady as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
