No. 2182 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, The Texas Legislative Black Caucus, an organization of African American lawmakers dedicated to advocating for the needs and interests of their constituents, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding in 2023; and WHEREAS, The caucus was formed in 1973 with eight founding members, Representatives Anthony Hall, Mickey Leland, Senfronia Thompson, and Craig Washington of Houston, Representatives Sam Hudson, Eddie Bernice Johnson, and Paul Ragsdale of Dallas, and Representative G. J. Sutton of San Antonio; since its inception, the organization has remained committed to implementing policies that provide communities with resources for economic growth and to serving as a liaison between politicians and constituents; and WHEREAS, Today, the Texas Legislative Black Caucus is composed of 18 members of the Texas House of Representatives and two members of the Texas Senate; under the leadership of Representative Ron Reynolds of Missouri City during the 88th Legislative Session, the men and women of the organization continue to work to promote dialogue on issues of concern to their communities and to pass legislation that reflects the priorities of the Texans they serve; and WHEREAS, Over the last five decades, the members of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus, past and present, have demonstrated the strength that can be achieved through collective action, and it is a privilege to join in congratulating the organization on reaching this special milestone; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby honor the Texas Legislative Black Caucus on the occasion of its 50th anniversary and extend to its members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
