H.R. No. 31 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Jeremy Peña achieved historic success in his first season with the Houston Astros by claiming 2022 Most Valuable Player honors in both the American League Championship Series and the World Series; and WHEREAS, A rookie shortstop, Mr. Peña was called up from Houston's reserve player squad and emerged as a dominant force during the 2022 regular season, posting 22 home runs to help the Astros enter the playoffs; he contributed a home run in their division series sweep of Seattle, and he produced two doubles and two home runs in the team's four-game ALCS sweep of the New York Yankees; his MVP performance helped secure Houston's fourth AL pennant in the past six years and a berth in the Fall Classic against the Philadelphia Phillies; and WHEREAS, Mr. Peña exhibited remarkable confidence on the World Series stage, going 10 for 25 at the plate and displaying superb glove work on defense; his go-ahead solo shot in Houston's game five win was the first World Series homer by a rookie shortstop, and he further showcased his skills in game six, hitting two singles in four trips to the plate; with the contest scoreless after five innings, he delivered a clutch single, setting up a three-run homer that proved to be the decisive play in the Astros' 4-1 victory that clinched their second overall crown; and WHEREAS, Racking up hits in all six World Series games, Mr. Peña became the first rookie position player to be named the World Series MVP; furthermore, he is only the third first-year player to receive that honor, and the 2022 Gold Glove winner is just the second Major League Baseball rookie to collect league championship series and World Series MVP awards in the same year; he played baseball for the University of Maine before being selected as Houston's third-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, and he joined the Astros after 182 minor league games; and WHEREAS, Jeremy Peña has distinguished himself as one of the top young competitors in Major League Baseball, and his accomplishments have inspired sports fans across the Lone Star State and the nation; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Jeremy Peña on being named the 2022 MVP of the American League Championship Series and the World Series and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Peña as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
