R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, The I AM a Golfer Foundation is hosting the
inaugural Southwest Airlines Showcase at the Cedar Crest Golf
Course from November 13 to 15, 2023; and
WHEREAS, An amateur invitational event, the Showcase at Cedar
Crest features top college-aged golfers from diverse backgrounds;
the field of 21 men and 21 women players are competing for
concurrent championships, and the 54-hole stroke play tournament
will be broadcast live on the Golf Channel; the three days of
competition are preceded by weekend events that include a player
reception, a host of additional community events, and an 18-hole
Sponsor-Am; and
WHEREAS, The tournament serves to highlight the important
work carried out by the I AM a Golfer Foundation; established in
2018, the group is dedicated to supporting community renewal in
Southern Dallas through its efforts to program, preserve, and
promote the historic Cedar Crest Golf Course; since its inception,
the organization has engaged over 650 area youth in instructional
programming at Cedar Crest, created nearly 100 internship positions
for local students, and awarded more than $200,000 in college and
higher education scholarships; the foundation has also
successfully advocated for more than $1 million in course
improvements, and each year it holds the Dallas Amateur
Championship and the Friends of Cedar Crest Golf Classic as well as
other events to bring awareness to the course and community; the
organization benefits from the able leadership of its founder Ira
Molayo, co-founder and chairman Dave Ridley, and executive director
Chuck Walker; and
WHEREAS, By highlighting this historic golf course that is a
Texas Golf Hall of Fame inductee and helping to promote diversity in
the sport, the Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest is a
welcome addition to the Lone Star State's outstanding lineup of
sporting events, and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing Cedar
Crest Golf Course on this special occasion; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 2023
Southwest Airlines Showcase at Cedar Crest event and extend to the
organizers, athletes, and attendees sincere best wishes for a
successful showcase; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Cedar Crest Golf Course and the I AM a Golfer
Foundation as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
Representatives.
