No. 57 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Rear Admiral Samuel Perez Jr., a survivor of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, has rendered outstanding service to his country throughout his tenure in the U.S. Navy; and WHEREAS, Samuel Perez Jr. entered the United States Naval Academy in 1976, and he graduated in 1980 with a bachelor's degree in political science; after being commissioned as an officer, he attended basic training in Coronado, California; and WHEREAS, At sea, Rear Admiral Perez served aboard several ships, and he took command of the USS Reclaimer, the USS Vincennes, and Destroyer Squadron 15; during his tour as commander of Carrier Strike Group One, he completed a 5th Fleet deployment to support Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn; his assignments while ashore have included leadership positions with the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization, the Chief of Naval Operations, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff; in the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, he served as chief of staff and deputy commander of the 5th Fleet; and WHEREAS, During his tenure as deputy assistant secretary, Rear Admiral Perez provided executive leadership for U.S. government global security assistance programs and policies; he also served multiple command and staff tours for the Department of Defense, and he gained extensive operational experience in Far East Asia and the Arabian Gulf region; his other commands included the Joint Task Force-Port Opening and the effort to reconstruct the Port-au-Prince port following the 2010 Haiti earthquake; and WHEREAS, In 2010, while in command of Carrier Strike Group One, Rear Admiral Perez assumed command of Carrier Task Force Five Zero, and he conducted missions in support of sensitive national tasking, theater security cooperation, intelligence collection, maritime security, and counter-piracy operations; Carrier Strike Group One also oversaw the burial at sea for Osama Bin Laden; and WHEREAS, Rear Admiral Samuel Perez has set an inspiring example of leadership, dedication, and integrity throughout his career in the military, and his contributions have earned him the lasting gratitude of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Rear Admiral Samuel Perez Jr. for his distinguished military service and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Rear Admiral Perez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
