No. 126 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Matthew Wright of Austin won the unified division title at the Special Olympics North America Golf Championship, held in Seaview, New Jersey, from October 2 through 5, 2023; and WHEREAS, Joining some 200 other players from across the United States and Canada at the tournament, Mr. Wright teamed with his longtime partner/coach, Drew Widney, in the unified competition; the pair edged an Arizona team by three strokes in the final game of the three-day, 54-hole event to claim the title; and WHEREAS, A versatile athlete, Mr. Wright has participated in a wide range of Special Olympics events over the years, earning numerous medals; his achievements in golf have included winning a gold medal at the 2016 Fall Classic, held at the Briarcrest Country Club in Bryan, and he has spent countless hours practicing at Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin; his success in the sport has enabled him to follow in the footsteps of his grandmother, who was a 21-time champion at El Paso Country Club; and WHEREAS, Mr. Wright graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in 2008 and became one of 10 students to participate in the Austin Independent School District Greater Opportunities Project at St. Edward's University; he has been employed as an assistant sergeant-at-arms and messenger with the Texas House of Representatives for more than 15 years, carrying out numerous responsibilities for the members of the legislature; he has also served his fellow citizens as a member of the Texas State Guard; and WHEREAS, Through determination, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to play at the top of his game, Matthew Wright has excelled in a prestigious national golf competition, and he may indeed take pride in this splendid accomplishment; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate Matthew Wright on winning the unified division title at the 2023 Special Olympics North America Golf Championship and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Wright as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
